Summary
Laparoscopic splenectomy (SL) is a relevantly recent operation procedure gradually gaining popularity. Indications for SL are similar as for open splenectomy with the following limitations: thrombocytopenia below 60 000 mm3 unmanagable haemorrhagic disorders, over 20 cm spleen. Prior to SL the following should be considered: accessory spleens, antibacterial prophylaxis and antithrombotic prophylaxis in patients with normal platelet count. SL effects are similar as for open splenectomy, however postoperative complications occur less frequently, hospitalization is shorter and patients regain physical fitness faster.
