Summary
In this paper the actual views on ethiopathology of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) is reviewed. The role of BCR-ABL fusion gene, regarded as the hallmark of CML, is underlined. Actual views on function of BCR-ABL gene, its transforming potential and the links between the disease phenotype and the composition of the fusion BCR-ABL protein are given. Biologic significance and clinical implication of the presence of BCR-ABL fusion genes in leukocytes of normal individuals are discussed.
