Summary
For the stressed patient, appropriate and sympathetic information is a major factor in their psychological preparation for anaesthesia and surgery. The vast majority of patients try to gather as much information as possible regarding their disease and possible complications of medical activities. A minority of patients decline detailed information and try to minimise any thoughts of risk and/or danger.
There is no uniform agreement regarding the best form of information, oral or written. Modern psychologists regard personalised information obtained from the attending physician to be more valuable, although universal hospital leaflets may help. It is important to remember however, that the level of information must be tailored to the patient´s education and level of understanding, and that too much information can result in paradoxical reactions. The most important information sought by the patient is: diagnosis, duration and course of treatment, recommendations regarding further investigations, and quality of life. Generally speaking, physicians underestimate the patient´s needs in this area and the information delivered, is based on their own way of thinking rather than patient´s needs and expectations. The scope of the information provided is usually much narrower than expected. The satisfaction of the patient depends not only on the amount of information, but also on how it is delivered, the simplicity of the language used, and the relationship between the physician and the patient.
