Summary
There has been growing a scientific interest in the use of dietary phytochemicals (especially polyphenolic compounds) in the therapy of two most common killers in the developed world: cardiovascular disease and cancer. Curcumin (diferuloylmethane) is a polyphenolic yellow pigment present in the rhizome of turmeric (Curcuma longa, Zingiberaceae). It has been shown to possess a wide range of pharmacological activities including anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-angiogenic and also antioxidative properties. Since numerous reports have indicated that oxidative stress and inflammation play an important role in most cardiovascular diseases (including atherosclerosis), curcumin may have a potential role in the protection of the circulatory system.
