Summary
Isoflavonoids are a group of chemical compounds which is widely distributed in a vegetable world. Their biological activity has found remarkable pharmaceutical, therapeutic, dietary and nutritional applications. They have also been found as useful cosmetic ingredients. Isoflavonoids make a group of natural, chemical compounds with non-steroid structure and estrogenic, anti-estrogenic, antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, preservative, anti-inflammatory, detoxication and immunological properties. They also regulate cells proliferation. Recently an increasing interest in isoflavoinoids, especially genistein, daidzein and biochanin A was observed. Numerous scientific investigations of the activity of this compounds indicate that isoflavonoids are useful in therapy and prophylaxis of many diseases, for example: diabetes, cancer, allergy, inflammation, bacterial and viral infections, cholesterol and triglyceride excess and reproductive system disorders. They are also used in cosmetic, because they delay the onset of ageing in human skin cells, stimulate collagen biosynthesis in fibroblasts and accelerate epidermis cells regeneration. Scientific research has confirmed that isoflavonoids are used in therapy of osteoporosis, excessive angiogenesis, lipid peroxidation in blood, fertility disorders, addictions and many other diseases. Future research should focus on the molecular aspects of their action in cells and possible side effects caused by isoflavonoids.
