Summary
Admission to hospital is itself a stressful experience. Patients find themselves in an unpleasant and unfamiliar environment. The anxiety is enhanced by the prospects of surgery, pain, and a long stay in the hospital. Over two thirds of patients awaiting surgery are anxious The degree to which each patient manifests anxiety related to anticipated experiences depends on many factors. These include, but are not limited to age, gender, type and extent of the proposed surgery, familiarity with and preparedness for the procedures, and previous surgical experiences. It is not related however, to the educational level or profession of the patient.
Appropriate premedication can decrease the level of preoperative anxiety but prior information and a preoperative visit also play important roles. Improved patient-physician relationships may encourage confidence and decrease the number of legal claims.
