Summary
Ginkgo biloba - a plant used for many years in traditional Chinese medicine, due to its properties, has attracted the attention and interest of physicians of various specialties. The results of clinical trials carried out recently seem to justify considerable interest in this raw material and confirm the purposefulness of using Ginkgo biloba extract in the treatment of such pathologies as: disturbances of peripheral and cerebral circulation, Alzheimer´s diseasse, vascular dementia, peripheral claudication and tinnitus of vascular origin. There are reports accounting for favourable therapeutic effect of Ginkgo biloba extract in patients with glaucoma. The most important properties of the extract containing, among others, flavonoids and terpenoids include: neuroprotective and antioxidant action, membrane stabilization, inhibition of platelet-activating factor as well as apoptosis inhibition. Ginkgo biloba extract also causes endothelium relaxation mediated by inhibition of 3´,5´-cyclic GMP and protects nervous cells counteracting nitric oxide toxic damage.
