Summary
There is evidence that species are rich in bioactive compounds providing health benefits. The aim of our preliminary study was to investigate plasma cholesterol levels and total and antioxidant status (TAS) after consumption of oriental species. 12 healthy women (mean age 38.8±8.8 years) on not restricted Polish diet received one capsule with 1 g of powdered ginger, cinnamon, and clove (1:1:1) for 14 days. We observed reduction of mean levels of total cholesterol (6%) and LDL-cholesterol (16%). Surprisingly, TAS level also lowered (1.48±0.14 mmol/l vs. 1.15±0.15 mmol/l; p<0.0001). The question if it could be interpreted as a decreased need for oxidative defense mechanisms is an important issue for future research.
