Summary
Functional dyspepsia is a disease with a complex range of symptoms in the epigastrium. Not only adults but also children suffer from this disease. As pathophysiological causes of functional dyspepsia are not yet fully understood, symptoms oriented therapy prevails. Randomised double blind trials in adults have shown that STW5 (Iberogast(r)) is an efficient and well tolerated drug in functional dyspepsia. To assess the efficacy and tolerability of the herbal preparation STW5 in children with functional dyspepsia based on a retrospective data analysis. In total, we analysed the data of 1.042 up to 12 years old children with functional dyspepsia, 545 boys and 497 girls. We compared the administered drug doses to the instructions for use, calculated on the number of drops per day. Additionally, we recorded the duration of treatment.Main outcome variables were side-effects and their documentation. Furthermore, we evaluated interactions with other drugs, criteria for stop of treatment and global assessment of efficacy and tolerability. Patients´ age varied between one month and 12 years and 2 months. Most of the children were between 6 and 12 years old (73.90%). In the mean, the patients took 36.64 drops of the herbal preparation per day. In comparison with the instructions for use, younger patients showed a tendency for higher doses, the 6 to 12 years old children for lower doses. On average, treatment lasted 11.05±7.38 days. Side-effects and interactions were documented in 2 cases each, and stop of treatment in 14 children (1.34%), out of these in 2 patients due to improvement/successful treatment. The physicians assessed the efficacy and tolerability of the herbal preparation in 96.84% and 97.99% of the cases as very good and good. This retrospective study about efficacy and tolerability of STW5 for treatment of children with functional dyspepsia confirms corresponding data of adults.
