Summary
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is demyelinating disease of central nervous system. Its aetiology is connected with dysfunction of immunological system. The aim of this study was to assess efficacy and tolerability of Tołpa peat preparation (PTT), known to have certain immunomodulating properties, in supportive treatment of MS. The study included 127 patients (30 men, 97 women, aged 18-56 ), with clinically definite relapsing-remitting MS. In double-blind manner they obtained PTT or placebo for 12 months. After 3, 6, 9 and 12 months following parameters were assessed: basic circulatory parameters, EDSS score based on neurological examination, functional test of 15 m distance and (after 12 months only) the self-assessment STAI questionnaire. Relapses, infections and all adverse effects were noted. In patients obtaining PTT frequency of infections was significantly lower than in placebo group. Both groups did not differ significantly as for progression in EDSS score after the treatment, number of relapses dring the treatment, results of 15 m test or STAI questionnaire. There were no clinically significant adverse effects in both grups. PTT causes decrease in frequency of infections in MS patients but it does not affect course of the disease. It is well tolerated, with no adverse effects. PTT can be used in supportive treatment of MS patients in order to enhance natural immunoresistance of the organism.
