Summary
Herbal raw materials contain large numbers of pharmacologically active compounds with concentrations dependant on climatic zone therefore biological methods are still the preffered ones in their standardization. In Poland pigeons are used for Convallaria glycosides standardization whilst in European Union countries – guinea-pigs. Once Poland has joined European Union, the procedures of biological assay of glycoside preparations will have to be changed. This study aimed to compare the results of biological assay of glycosides contained in the lot of Convallaria maialis herb using methods according to FP IV (on pigeons) and DAB 10 (on guinea-pigs). No major differences between the results of the experiments carried out on pigeons and guinea-pigs were identified during the study which indicates that both methods show similar sensitivity. The method according to FP IV simpler and does not require specialist equipment.
