Summary
Herbal remedies should be examined as for efficacy and toxicity. One of the methods is pharmacokinetic evaluation and assessment of biovailability. Pharmacokinetics describes plasma/serum concentration changes versus time of main constituents of herbal products (or active group of cons-tituents). The pharmacokinetic parameters e.g. biova-ilability, volume of distribution, clearance, elimination half-life are determined by using the exponential equations (mathematical models). Studies on the pharmacokinetics contribute to effective and save dosing of herbal remedies. Determination of pharmacokinetics of herbal extracts, especially of complex multiherbal preparations is sometimes difficult, because of paucity of analytical methods to assess concentration of those compounds in biological fluids.
