Summary
The chemical, physiological and pharmacological properties of unsaturated fatty acids were presented based on the literature. The pharmacological characteristics of metabolites of enzymatic cascade of linoleic and linolenic acid (mainly twenty carbon acids and eicosanoids) were described. The important functions of these acids in many biological transformations in the human body were discussed. Diet should contain the proper amount from both groups (n-3 and n-6) of unsaturated fatty acids. It is particularly important for older people because the slowed down metabolism can cause the deficiency of basic acids and their metabolites. Moreover, premature infants and artificially fed infants show the enlarged demand for poly-unsaturated fatty acids. The problem of supplementation during pregnancy and breast feeding is an important question widely discussed for many years in scientific literature.
Additionally, the pharmacological properties, clinical studies and particular indications for the application of two natural crude drugs: cod liver oil (Ol. Jecoris Aselli) and evening primrose oil (Ol. Oenotherae) as food supplements were presented. Both crude drugs are a basic source of n-3 and n-6 poly-unsaturated fatty acids.
