Summary
The main goal for this work is presentation of the scientific literature describing biological activity of the White/Common Horehound (Marrubium wulgare L., F. Lamiaceae). Biological activity of the Horehound were known for years, with beginning of its use reaching the time of the ancient Egypt. Extracts of the Horehound induce excretion process of the liver, because bile acts also on the mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract and enhance secretion of the mucus. Additionaly they act also as relaxant on smooth muscles. Raw matterial and its preparations affect the cardio-vascular system acting as antiarrhythmic, similar to quinidine. Active substances present in the Horehound, especially marrubine, marrubenic acid and marrubenol exhibit antinociceptive, cholagogic and hypotensive activities respectively.
