Summary
Sexual dysfunctions in men are related to reduced libido and erectile dysfunction, in women they are disorders related to sexual desire, arousal, orgasm. Some drugs are capable of inhibiting sexual desire and performance. Impairment of libido and erection may result from the use of barbiturates, narcotics, tranquilizers, and other depressant drugs. Alcohol in moderation may help free sexual desire by lessening inhibitions, but in excess it depresses the central nervous system, hence sexual performance. Many plants have been reported to be effective in sexual disfunction. Some may have a specific action, but most act through vasodilatation, by enhancing nitric oxide synthesis in the endothelium of many organs, including the corpora cavernosa or antioxidant properties and as general tonics.
