Summary
The sensitivity to Eucalyptus Oil (Avicenna-Oil – Wrocław) 71 strains of anaerobic bacteria isolated from patients with infections of oral cavity and respiratory tract were evaluated. Investigations was carried out using the plate dilution technique in Brucella agar supplemented with 5% defibrynated sheep blood, menadione and hemin. Inoculum containing 106 microorganisms (CFU) per spot was seeded with Steer´s replicator upon the surface of agar with various oil concentrations as well as upon that with no oil added (strains growth control). Incubation the plates was performed in anaerobic jar in anaerobic conditions at 37°C. Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were read after 48 hours. The results indicated, that the most susceptible to Eucalyptus Oil among Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria were the strains belonging to the genera Prevotella, Bacteroides and Fusobacterium. MIC for 65-75% of these strains were in ranges of ≤0,06-0,5 mg/ml. The strains from the genera of Veillonella were the lowest sensitive to tested oil (MIC in range of 0,25->3,0 mg/ml). From among Gram-positive anaerobes the most sensitive to oil were the strains of Gram-positive cocci. The growth of 69% of these strains were inhibited within the range of ≤0,06-0,5 mg/ml. The strains of Actinomyces and Eubacterium were the lowest sensitive to Eucalyptus Oil (MIC ≥3,0 mg/ml).
