Streszczenie
Aim.The aim of this study is to identify potential nutritional deficits in children with autism, and a correlation between the diet and functioning of an autistic child.
Material and methods. The studies concern five cases of children with autism aged from 8 to 10 years. Daily intake of nutrients for the five cases was obtained an the basis of the seven day diet described in the report prepared by the parents. For all five cases, nutrient values were calculated on the basis of literature data taking into account the portion size and dose of supplements. The children were diagnosed as autistic using the criteria for ICD-10 (DSM IV).
Results. The characteristics of functioning of each of the five autistic children obtained from the studies, psychological testing and speech therapy were presented. Nutrient values for each autistic child were compared with RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowances).
Conclusion. The studies showed that the diet of autistic children should be enriched in vitamins of B group and vitamin C. In the case of autism, an appropriately composed diet and the reduction in the consumption of certain allergens can significantly prevent problems with the digestive, immune and neurological system.
