Streszczenie
The indications for fitting percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) in children are, first of all, swallowing dysfunctions caused by neurological disturbances, neoplastic growth, and oesophageal defects that make proper feeding in children impossible.
PEG consists in inserting a gastrostomic tube into the stomach under general anesthesia. A child stays in hospital for 24 hours after the procedure. It is only after three days that the full caloric need is supplied by means of liquid diet via gastrostomy.
18 PEGs have been inserted in children aged 2-17. In 13 cases the indication was congenital neurological disturbances, in 2 post-encephalitis condition, and in 3 children – brain tumor.
No early or remote complications were stated after PEG. No inflammatory reactions or escape of the gastric juice around the gastrostomic tube were observed.
PEG is an ideal and minimally traumatic procedure in children with the dysfunction of swallowing.
