Diagnosis of food allergy and its treatment is one of the most challenging tasks for the practicing physician. Symptomatology of food allergy is diverse. The symptoms from the skin and respiratory system depend most often on IgE-dependent immunological reactions, and isolated symptoms from gastrointestinal system are in the majority of cases the IgE-independent reactions. Proper diagnosis requires cooperation of physician and parents of the child as well as various diagnostic tehniques such as family history, physical examination, skin prick tests, blood tests (IgE, allergen-specific IgE), oral provocation and elimination tests. Double blind placebo controlled food challenge (DBPCFC) is regarded as a gold standard in food allergy diagnosis. Elimination of sensitizing foods is the only method in food allergy therapy. Induction of tolerance for cow milk and other food allergens develops at various age and therefore the provocation tests should be repeated.
