Their claimed benefits are to alleviate lactose maldigestion, increase resistance to invasion by pathogenic species of bacteria in the gut, stimulate the immune system and possibly protect against cancer. Certain probiotic species have been shown to shorten the duratin of rotavirus diarrhea in children. The use of evidence based methods, such as randomised double-blind, placebo-controlled studie are essential step forward for assesing validity and efficacy of probiotic in the treatment of immflamatory bowel diseases and prevention of newborn necrotic enterocolitis, atopic dermatitis and infections of respiratory tract.
