Streszczenie
Procalcitonin (PCT) is a postulated new specific bacterial and fungal generalised infection marker. It therefore seems potentially useful in oncological haematology patients, in whom it is vital to distinguish between bacterial sepsis versus neoplasmatic relapse. This was not always possible with classical inflammatory markers such as body temperature, WBC count, ESR or CRP value.
A group of 10 patients, aged 2-10 years was analysed.
In 5 patients elevated PCT levels were noted (norm: 1.0 ng/ml. Simultaneously marked CRP values were raised in a11 patients ranging 0.6-21.25 (norm: 0.53 ng/ml).
This report did not show the evident existence of the PCT elevation only with the occurence of generalised bacterial and fungal infections.
In uncertain cases low PCT levels could indicate lack of generalised infection, however explicit evaluation requires further investigation.
