1. Evaluation of the frequency and length of breastfeeding in infants and children up to 2 years old from Upper Silesia region.
2. Identification of factors responsible for length of breastfeeding.
Methods and Materials. The examination was made in the group of 300 mothers of children between 1-24 months old on the basis of an exclusive questionnaire concerning breastfeeding, social and economic situation of the families as well as the sources of information on breastfeeding.
For the assessment of results descriptive and analytical statistics has been used.
Results. 93.67% of newborns was breastfed, 53 (84.12%) premature newborns, up to the end of the 6th month 45.33%, but merely 2.6% was fed only on natural milk. In the second half those breast-fed were only 30% and in the second year of life 17% of children. The factor which shortened the length of breastfeeding was additional feeding on artificial milk, and the factors which prolonged the breastfeeding were: term and spontaneous labor and parents with higher education.
Conclusions. 1. In spite of the fact that the number of breast-fed babies has grown, including premature newborns, the importance of breastfeeding as the only source of food within the first half year of newborn´s life should still be promoted.
2. Medical health workers should be ready to help breastfeeding mothers, special supportive groups should be created to encourage mothers that would consequently result in prolongation of breastfeeding period.
3. The observation did not show the relation between the economic conditions and the way of feeding the newborns from Silesian Voivodship, however parents´ higher education resulted in heightened awareness of the influence of breastfeeding on child´s development.
