Streszczenie
A premature birth defined as childbirth before the 37^th week of pregnancy concerns 8-12% of all the pregnancies. It is a significant cause of giving birth to a child belonging to the group of newborns with high mortality, high disease incidence and risk of the future developmental disorders´ occurrence. The paper is an attempt to present the causese of premature childbirth and the survival rate among the newborns with very low birth body mass in the Opolskie Province in the years 1998-2003.
