Summary
In recent years, acute pain services have been established in many hospitals. Effective treatment of acute and postoperative pain provides many benefits for patients and hospitals. By breaking the vicious circle of pain-related complications we may shorten the postoperative stay, and decrease postoperative morbidity and mortality. Optimal treatment is best determined by a specialist teams using scientifically proven pain assessment scales, established techniques and a systematic approach. Various models and national approaches are discussed. In Poland, acute pain teams are still very rare and should be more widely introduced.
