Summary
The success rate associated with spinal anaesthesia, reported by various authors, ranges from 83.0% to 98.1%. Among the most common causes of failure are: a high volume of cerebrospinal fluid; adhesions in the subarachnoid space; individual differences in spinal nerve root diameters; inadvertent injection of local anaesthetic agent into the subdural space; and injection with the patient in the sitting position. Density and pH of the cerebrospinal fluid play less important roles in failed blocks. Incorrect assessment of patient height, lack of patient cooperation, and the experience of the anaesthetist are factors that also should be considered.
