Streszczenie
Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disorder characterized by the presence of noncaseating granulomas.
Many patients with verified sarcoidosis recover spontaneously. There is, however, a subgroup of patients who gradually deteriorate and develop irreversible fibrosis, and functional impairment. These patients need treatment, which should be started as soon as the unfavourable clinical course has been identified.
Until now corticosteroids have been the mainstay of treatment. Unfortunately, however, their long-term administration leads to many complications. Thus an effective alternative therapy for patients with progressive sarcoidosis would be a useful addition to the current pharmacologic armamentarium. Other drugs, which have a steroid – sparing capacity, are azathioprine, cyclophosphamide, methotrexate and chlorambucil.
