Summary
Retinoids, which are derivatives of vitamin A, modulate many of physiological pathways including cellular growth, differentiation and maintenance of epithelial tissues. Based on these retinoids have been approved for the topical and systemic use in treating variety of skin diseases for example, acne, psoriasis, genodermatoses, neoplasm and several other conditions.
The paper presents the clinical indications for these drugs in dermatology, the efficacy and the significant undesirable effects, which can be limited by using a new generation of receptor-selective retinoids.
