Summary
Deep vein thrombosis of the legs is a serious and potentially fatal disorder associated with death from pulmonary embolism and morbidity resulting from recurrent venous thromboembolic events, and the post-thrombotic syndrome. Anticoagulant therapy is the treatment of choice for venous thromboembolism. There is strong evidence from several clinical trials that low molecular weight heparin is at least as effective as unfractioned heparin in terms of reduction of venous thromboembolic complications.
