Streszczenie
The diagnosis of cancer is a very difficult moment both for doctor and for patient. Information about the diagnosis of desease, further treatment and prognosis considerably influence patient´s and his relatives´ life and, what´s more, a way of informing them is crucial. Thus doctors are facing serious dilemmas: whether tell that or not, when, to whom, and how rather to help than to harm.
The problem of informing is legitimated in several regulations. The conclusion is parallel: doctor has to stand his duty and inform patient about the diagnosis, treatment plan, possible complications, risks and prognosis in the way suitable for patient. The situation in which doctor estimates such information as harmful for the patient and informs his family instead is an exception. However, upon request of the patient to inform him or even not to do that – doctor should adjust to his will. The question of limitation of information for the sake of the patient, what exactly is his right and if it is implied in the same way, when the situation is exceptional and how to inform patient – it is doctor´s decision. The programmes of teaching medicine lack both theoretical knowledge about the contacts doctor – patient as well as practical workshops which would enable developing communication skills. Thus the Polish doctor is facing dilemmas in his own conscience.
