Aim of the study: The aim of our study was to estimate the frequency and the histological structure of the benign and malignant tumors of the parotid gland in surgically threated patients of the Departament of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery of Lublin Specialistic District Hospital.
Material and methods: In the Departament of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery of Lublin Specialistic District Hospital 89 patients were surgically treated because of parotid glands tumors in the years 2000-2005. In 70 patients (78,6%) benign tumors and in 19 patients (21,4%) malignant tumors were observed.
Results: All patients with benign tumors were surgically treated, patients with malignant tumors were operated on and irradiated. The diagnosis have included ultrasonography and biopsy. When the malignant tumor, tumor of the deep part of the gland or tumor of the parapharyngeal space was suspected a computer tomography and histological examination during surgical treatment were performed. In group of 70 patients with benign tumors in 52 (74,3%) a superficial parotidectomy, in 11 cases (15,7%) a total parotidectomy with tumor penetrating to parapharyngeal space and in 7 patients (10%) a subtotal parotidectomy with tumor of a deep part of parotid gland were done.
