Summary
Sport is considered to be indispensable for the maintenance of health. However, in the case of athletes changes in electrocardiography are often observed. Is it a pathology or physiological adaptation? The aim of the presented case was to answer this question.
The authors report a history of a 12-year-old boy admitted to the Department of Cardiology with the early repolarization pattern and J point elevation in ECG, which had been initially diagnosed as myocardial infarction during routine check-up for young athletes. The patient was asymptomatic and did not report the chest pain. He had good effort tolerance while training football. Biomarkers relevant for myocardial infarction were negative. The heart silhouette was not enlarged in chest x-ray. Left ventricular size and function was normal, without any regional contractility disturbances in two-dimensional echocardiography. The normalization of repolarization changes during a treadmill test proved the benign nature of ECG changes. The authors point out the importance of proper ECG interpretation in athletes.
