Summary
Introduction. The Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) belongs to one of the most frequent pathologies in childhood with the prevalence between 3 and 10%. The disorder is characterized as a triad of symptoms: attention deficit, hyperactivity and impulsivity.
Aim. The aim of the study was to assess the physical development and circulatory system in boys with ADHD.
Material and methods. The study group consisted of 36 boys aged from 7 to 17 years, average 11.3 ± 2.6 years in whom ADHD was recognized based on DSM-5 criteria. Diagnostic methods included: anthropometric (weight, height, body mass index), heart rate, standard blood pressure measurements, chest X-ray, ECG and two-dimensional echocardiography.
Results. The body weight in 61.1% boys was above 50th percentile and the height was above 50th percentile in 63.8%. The physical development was harmonious in 35 patients only 1 was overweight. The values both of systolic and diastolic pressure were within limits, in majority below 50th percentile (systolic in 75% and diastolic in 94.4% of the boys under study). No significant abnormalities in chest X-ray, ECG or echocardiography were found.
Conclusions. The boys with ADHD present harmonious physical development, in the majority the body weight and height distribution is above the 50th percentile. Their arterial blood pressure is in lower percentile charts. ECG is within normal limits. No abnormalities in the cardiovascular system which could have an impact on the decisions about pharmacotherapy in ADHD, were substantiated.
