Summary
Children, especially newborns and infants breathe differently than adults. Typical for young children is rapid and shallow breathing. For small children natural are also short, a few seconds apnea does not cause a reduction in saturation. Apnea is called a state of multiple episodes of respiratory arrest or restrict the flow of air through the respiratory system (≥ 15 seconds), which results is in a decrease in arterial oxygen saturation, namely to reduce saturation.
The aim of the study is to analyze the case of a child with sleep apnea hospitalized at the Clinic of Pediatric Otolaryngology SPDSK in Warsaw.
The study included an infant hospitalized twice in the Clinic of Pediatric Otolaryngology SPDSK in Warsaw.
Problems with feeding the child occurred from the beginning. Feeding time a child stood between 1-1.5 hours during a single feeding. After the surgery to remove the cyst of the tongue feeding time a child has considerably diminished and was about 8-10 minutes. Along with the problem of food intake, there was a problem of the proper development of the child, namely gain weight. Following surgery, the child began to breathe normally, i.e. there was no heavy breathing/wheezing child or snoring. At follow-up, where the child was not observed abnormalities in the child’s development. The child is developing properly.
Quick diagnosis and do not underestimate even the smallest signs of OSA enables early treatment. Even earlier recognize OSA and begin to properly treat our patient the greater the chances for normal development of the child and the ability to prevent the development of complications of obstructive sleep apnea.
