Summary
The aim of the study was to present a clinical case of a boy suffering from exophthalmos as a result of sinus-related complications of maxillary sinus mucocele.
The boy was hospitalized in the Department of Pediatric Otolaryngology Medical University in Warsaw in October 2015. He was treated for chronic cystic fibrosis and was admitted to emergency room because of pain in the eye and progressive bulging of an eyeball (exophthalmos).
The patient under went magnetic resonance imagining and computed tomography scan which showed maxillary sinus lesion which probably was a mucocele. An endoscopic sinus surgery was performed in order to remove the lesion and this histopathological material was obtained which confirmed the initial diagnosis.
Complications of sinusitis are most often the result of exacerbated chronic inflammation of paranasal sinuses. Mucoceleis a special case among the causes of orbital complications in children. The diagnosis is made on the basis of patient interview, imaging examination and histopathological examination.
