The article discusses the pathophysiology and the natural course of respiratory tract infections, as well as methods of symptom-oriented treatment approach dependent on the stage of infection. It presents detailed description of treatment with the use of antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, decongestive, antisecretory, cough-supressing and mucolitic agents, and their respective merits and shortcomings.
