Summary
Breast milk is a most important nutrient for children younger than one year old or even sometimes for older. It can cover daily allowance of different nutrients due to its special composition adjusted to child´s age. Breast milk is composed of many bioactive agents like enzymes, hormones, bioactive peptides and growth factors. Some of them are involved in immunological defense system and have immunomodulating activity. Other breast milk compounds can have an impact on development and maturation of several important organs. This paper presents current information about properties of breast milk compounds. It should be stressed that in recent references there is a big number of data about biological function of different breast milk ingredients like proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamin precursors and trace elements. Brest milk is a living tissue and requires in further future investigations.
