Profesor Kornel Michejda – Sprawiedliwy wśród Narodów Świata

Summary
The aim of this paper is to present the figure of professor Kornel Michejda, who is recognized as “Righteous Among the Nations” for having taken risks to help Jews during the Holocaust. The material comes from archival records of the Jewish Historical Institute, printed papers and books and professor Michejda’s diary. Kornel Michejda was born on October 26, 1887 in Bystrzyca (Poland). He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow (Poland). After his arrival to Vilnius professor Michejda formed the Surgical Department of the Stefan Batory University which dealt with general and other fields of surgical issues such as urologic surgery. During the World War II professor Michejda participated in secret teaching and hiding Jews. He saved two friends of him, also former lecturers of Stefan Batory University: Professor Michał Reicher and professor Ignacy Abramowicz. During his post-war professional career he was connected with Gdańsk and Kraków and played a meaningful role in the development of polish surgery.
