Summary
Masticatory organ motor system dysfunction is the third most common dental problem after caries and periodontal diseases. These disorders affect more and more of the population regardless of age and social conditions. They are much more common among women and in developed countries. The classic triad of symptoms includes pain in the facial part of a skull, sounds and incorrect mobility of the temporomandibular joints. Due to the complexity of the structure and activity of the masticatory organ motor system have appeared many conceptions and ways of treatment approaches of its dysfunction. Initial theories assumed mechanistic conception of the etiology of functional disturbances. Then the effect of psycho-emotional tension and general factors on masticatory organ and temporomandibular joints have been noticed. Therefore the concept of multifactorial etiology of dysfunction has been adopted. Different classifications of masticatory organ dysfunction have been created along with the development of studies about the etiology of these disorders.
