Summary
Introduction: Actinomycosis is a specific inflammation caused by Gram positive bacteria living as commensal organisms in the oral cavity, respiratory and digestive tracts. Of the five actinomyces species causing actinomycosis infection, Actinomyces Israeli is the most frequently isolated. In the mids of cervicofacial, pulmothoracic and abdominal types the cervicofacial form is treated in The Department of Oral Surgery.
Aim: The aim of the paper is to show the diagnostic difficulties occur in patients with cervical-facial actinomycosis, not treated due to general illness who have experienced chronic inflammation.
Material and methods: Review of medical records from the Department of Oral Surgery, Medical University in 2009-2013. Actinomycosis was diagnosed and histopathologically confirmed in three patients who were not treated for general diseases.
Results: Confirmation by histopathologic examination of biopsy specimens sally performed in patients presenting with extra oral symptoms. The incidence of actinomycosis in patients treated in the Department of Oral Surgery is not possible to determine on the grounds of using synthetic penicillin preparations in thetreatment of inflammatory infiltrates.
Conclusions: Actinomycosis is a chronic disease that still occurs within the Polish population, even in patients without systemic diseases. However, it causes difficulty in diagnosis and is often not diagnosed.
