Analiza porównawcza wiedzy stomatologicznej dzieci w wieku przedszkolnym z dużego i małego miasta

Summary
Introduction: Crucial influence on teeth condition have oral health behaviors. Deficits in a knowledge of caries prevention measurements favour decays development. Therefore, oral health promotion among the small children is important in order to eliminate bad dental habits among society in the future.
Aim: Dental knowledge analysis of 4 to 5 year-old children in the survey. Assessment of the effectiveness of novel prevention and educational program designed for that age group.
Material and methods: The study included 64 preschool children: 33 from the big city (group 1) and 31 from the small city (group 2). Group 1 was previously involved in prevention program. Group 2 (control group) did not participate in any program. Questionnaire questions applied to tooth structure, oral hygiene, nutritional habits and frequency of visits in the dental office. The obtained data were analyzed by chi2 test.
Results: The knowledge of tooth structure, amount of paste placed on toothbrush depend on dental education. 97% children from group 1 know that teeth should be brushed 2 or 3 times a day and in the group 2 only 71%. Correct toothbrushing technique presented 93% children from group 1 and only 61% from group 2. Children from group 1 showed substantially better knowledge of the dental office equipment compared to children from group 2.
Conclusions: Oral health awareness of children after performed program is significantly better than the control group. That proves the effectiveness and purposefulness of preventive and educational programs among the small children.
