Summary
Introduction. Dysmenorrhea is a common and sometimes disabling condition among women in childbearing age. The exact cause of dysmenorrhea is not completely understood. Oral contraceptives are one of the treatment methods of primary dysmenorrhea. The exact mechanism of action of oral contraceptives in dysmenorrheal is not well understood.
Aim. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of oral contraceptive on hormonal profile and uterus contractions of patients with primary dysmenorrhea.
Material and methods. There were 10 female patients with primary dysmenorrhea included into the study. The serum level of oxytocin, vasopressin, PgF metabolite and uterus contractions activity were measured before and one month after application of oral contraceptive pills.
Results. Significant decrease in serum level of oxytocin, vasopressin, PgF metabolite and uterus contractions activity were observed after one month oral contraceptive treatment.
Conclusions. Oral contraceptives through influence on hormonal profile, synthesis of prostaglandins and uterus contractions decrease symptoms of dysmenorrhea. Unexplained mechanisms and multiple factors involved in the pathogenesis of primary dysmenorrhea indicates a need for the further studies on this subject.
