Summary
Introduction. The level of consumption of tobacco products in Poland is one of the highest in the world. It is assumed that every day in Poland over 10 million people, usually aged 20-50, reach for a cigarette.
Aim. The purpose of the paper is to evaluate the prevalence of nicotine addiction among students of Gdańsk universities from the perspective of lung cancer prophylaxis.
Material and methods. The material comprised 193 students of four Gdańsk universities. The paper used the diagnostic survey method and statistical methods, and the research tool was the survey questionnaire.
Results. The research results show that a considerable number of students of Gdańsk universities declare that they smoke and the most frequently provided reason for starting smoking is peer pressure and the desire to try. According to the research, the past educational activities are ineffective, and the little involvement of physicians in diagnosing nicotine addiction constitutes a serious problem.
Conclusions. The problem of nicotine addiction among the students of Gdańsk universities is widespread. This points to the ineffectiveness of the past educational activities. Lung cancer prophylaxis requires decisive action related to primary prophylaxis that primary health care physicians and nurses must be involved in.
