Summary
Introduction. Playing the transverse flute is a form of physical exercise which requires constant repetition of the same movements in the same position. This can lead to unfavourable changes in body posture.
Aim. The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between the parameters of the body posture measured with Moire’s photogrammetry and selected somatic features and motor abilities of girls playing the transverse flute.
Material and methods. The study assessed a group of 21 girls playing the transverse flute, aged between 12 and 14. Their height was measured with the anthropometer, and their weight with the scales. Based on the examination conducted with the help of photogrammetry, the study determined 13 various parameters of the body posture: 6 of which were in plane median and 7 in plane coronal. The Canadian Falkner’s test was used to determine the strength of the abdomen muscles, and Romanowska’s attempt to ‘lift the wings’ was used to assess the strength of the back muscles. The level of flexibility was assessed by the use of Hopkin’s and Hoeger’s test ‘sit down and reach’. Follwing the study, its results were then analized statistically.
Results. The height of the girls born in 1998 correlates 4 with various parameters of the body posture measured using the Moire’s method. The girls born in 1998 vary statistically from the girls born in 2000 only as far as the negative difference in the angle distance of the lower shoulder blades. It was noted that 7 girls born in 1998 were ‘outside’ the norm as far as the level of thoracic kyphosis (50% of all study subjects), 6 girls showed being outside the norm as far as lumbar lordosis, and 5 girls were outside the norm as far as the angle of thoracic kyphosis.
Conclusions. Half of the girls in the study demonstrated an incorrect body posture, which only proves the fact that playing the transverse flute may increase the risk of body posture defects.
