Summary
Introduction. The cesarean section is one of the most often surgical intervention used in modern obstetrics and that is the reason why it should be performed only in cases when specific indications are present. These indications have to justify the realization of surgical intervention which a cesarean section is. The indications exist also to prevent the abuse of this kind of interventions that can bring not only benefits but also many side effects. During the last years we can observe an expansion of the list of obstetrical and non-obstetrical indications to cesarean section performance.
Aim. Checking out which method is more often used: the natural delivery or cesarean section, by both asking women and on the basis of statistical data.
Material and methods. In this article there were two methods used: a survey and document analysis. The survey was made on two groups of patients. These were pregnant women which have not delivered yet and the women after the parturition. Both groups had 50 responding women, so the whole analysis involved 100 women.
Results. After results analysis obtained from the statistical data from two hospitals and also on the basis of surveys results given to 100 women, it was confirmed that the dominating way of the pregnancy resolution now is a cesarean section. The number of this surgical intervention is growing during the last five years.
Conclusions. Cesarean sections in the whole word as well as in Poland show constant growing tendency. The increasing number of cesarean sections in hospitals of Wrocław depends on: medicine progress, development of anesthetic techniques, neonatology development, change of the average age of pregnant women, higher consciousness and claims of pregnant women.
